I plan to accomplish these goals by creating a website that is easy to navigate. It will use geometric shapes and a controlled color scheme. Its largest strength will be in the abundance of large photos on display. It will also carry throughout it a logo for my name or title of my website.

Here are some websites that I found inspiring. Many of these websites have small aspects about them that I hope to bring into my website.

  I really like the sidebar/menu of this website. It is clean and simple and uses type that is timeless and easy to read. The simple color scheme (gray and orange) is utilized on all pages throughout the website which helps to hold everything together.

  The clean, geometric style of this website really catches my eye. It aesthetically pleasing and unique. The rollovers add an interactive aspect to the site that keeps me interested and wanting to explore the site more.

  What I find most appealing about this website is that the artist uses photos to click on to get to specific categories, not just words.

  I enjoy the sidebar of this website that simple and geometric and uses negative space.

  All of these websites utilize a large central visual that captures the viewers attention and encourages them to continue exploring the website.

I have mixed feelings about appropriation. I think it is such a difficult concept because it is so subjective. I would be ok with people using my work as a starting point to work off of. As art students we are required to take art history and learn about the work of those who came before us. Artists constantly look at other art for inspiration. However there is a big difference between using art that already exists as inspiration to base your work off of, and simply copying and adding a few changes.

I don’t think that Richard Prince’s work that was discussed in the article followed the law. He just added a few things to a photo and it was hard to distinguish any deeper meaning that he was trying to convey. It looked more like defacing artwork, that improving it to create a different piece.

I think to be successful in using appropriation you have to make a statement with your work and it has to work aesthetically. When looking at David Salle’s piece Brother Animal certainly a commentary of female sexuality but fails visually. The photos that he places together look random and mismatched and do not stimulate the viewer visually.

Appropriation becomes most successful when artists move beyond simply cutting and placing photos together. In his piece Map, John Jasper utilizes the mimeographed maps given to him by artist Robert Rauschenberg, but creates a beautiful and unique surface by experimenting with different printmaking techniques. Similarly in Waves, James Rosenquist uses found images, but renders them in a different medium when collaging them together to create a strong criticism of societies’ thoughts. Robert Pruitt is also another artist who I think is successful in using appropriation. Although the patterns he uses are his originally, he makes them his own by using them in ways outside of the fashion world that they are known in.
